Day 2: Island Hopping Tour C

               1st stop: Hidden Beach (where you can snorkel at the shallow water)
               2nd stop: Star Beach (where we had our lunch cooked and arranged by our tour guide, Kuya Felix and boatman, Kuya Dodong)
              3rd stop: We're supposed to go to Secret Beach but the waves were too strong to continue sailing.  (We found out the next day that there was an earthquake thus the unusual raging waves the other day)
              4th stop: Matinloc Shrine (where we climbed to the peak and got the best view of the horizon)
              5th stop: Kadlaw Lagoon
              6th stop: Helicopter Island (where we enjoyed snorkel that much and had to feed the fishes just to see them underwater and took a lot of pictures with them)

                  *while killing some time until dinner, enjoyed sitting at the porch, at the hammock or just sitting at the plastic chairs at the front of the resort.

                 1st Stop: The Small Lagoon (where you can swim from the main, small entrance to the lagoon)
                 2nd Stop: The Big Lagoon (we did not stop actually but only a detour as the lagoon is not safe for an amateur swimmers like us.  According to our tour guide, the water is as deep as the Barracuda Lake in Coron which we described as "bottomless".
                3rd Stop:  Simizu Island (where we had our lunch.  It is named after the two Japanese who attemped to make a tunnel at the bottom of the rock formation but eventually died due to lack of oxygen)
                4th Stop: Secret Lagoon and Secret Beach (it was so pristine and perfect for an overnight camping)
               5th Stop:  7 Commando Beach (a long stretch of shoreline perfect for swimming; there's a store there for a quick stop of coffee for us and beer and cocktails drinks for some foreign tourists.  A resort/hotel is currently in construction)

My 10-Day-Solitary-Travel to South Korea

Countdown to my 10-day-solo-travel to South Korea.. it's a nine-month project and been my dream to do - to travel S.O.L.O.

I'd been to South Korea last May 2010 with my friends and since then I got fascinated of the beautiful country.  Many named it as Europe of Asia.  I've been longing to stay longer (either travel, work or "study") abroad (for independence) but haven't had the opportunity. Been to KL, Malaysia for two weeks alone for business trips but that was a different experience - I had my most preferential treatments from business class flight to the grandest accommodation and daily Mercedez service to the office - i wanted to do it on my own.  How will i survive, how will i mingle with the locals and tourists like me and how will i go whatever the circumstances are.

As my 10-day countdown, here's my 10-day-itinerary:

Day 1 -  March 14

• KBS Exhibition Hall - Working for the number 1 broadcasting company in the Philipppines, ABS-CBN, I want to experience how KBS conduct their studio tours. Perhaps, I could bring something to share with my colleagues in Studio Tours.
•  Hello Kitty Cafe - I'm not a fan of a famous feline character but many of my friends are. How about having my brunch here?
• Samcheongdong/Bukchon Hanok Village - I stayed my last night in a traditional house in May 2010 but was not able to tour around the village.  I read from some blogs that there are around 9 spots best for photo.
• Insadong Ssamziegil - I'm fond of artsy stuff from pen, papers, clips, etc and Insadong is the best place to roam around.
• Myeongdong Cathedral - I was not able to visit the church during my first visit to Seoul.  So on my solo travel, I will attend their afternoon service.

Day 2 - March 15

• Seoraksan National Park - In 2010, I attempted to chase Spring in South Korea. This year I will chase Winter, the unmelted snow at the north of South Korea, Sokcho.  It's a 3-hour trip via bus from Seoul and might be a good chance to enjoy the scenery along the way.  I read that Seoraksan is known as Snow Mountain so I collected some winter gears and clothes and might try to hike as well.

Day 3 - March 16

• Universities In Seoul - Saturday is Hongdae Free Market, it's near Hongik University. I plan to go back to school for graduate studies but haven't had the chance to find time. I'm curious what universities look like in Seoul plus want to observe how students are. So I will do some loitering in Sungkyukwan University and Ehwa Women's University.
• Heyri Art Village and Province Village - It's 2-hour-bus-trip from Seoul and known as European Village.  I've been planning and saving for Europe Trip and a visit to this themed-like village might worth it!

Day 4 - March 17

It's my birthday! And I'm flying to Jeju Island - first stop is to hear mass at Seogwipo Church and then will tour the whole world at Soingook Theme Park!  Then I will eat at the famous black pork BBQ of Jeju with Korea's traditional seaweed soup for birthday's celeb.

Day 5 - March 18

It's Jungmun Tourist Complex Day and K-Drama Locations Tour! Will see the famous Teddy Bear Museum (of Princess Hours), Holland Windmill at Lotte Hotel (of Secret Garden),   Odolgae Rock (of Jumong) and Seeas Hotel ( of Boys Over Flowers) and many of the famous spots in Jungmun.

Day 6 - March 19

A day of adventure again for me! I will cross the ocean for a 15-minute ferry ride from Jeju to Udo Island where I can either see the whole island with a bike, scooter or ATV in just 2 hours!  Will definitely try their famous peanut ice cream.

Day 7 - March 20

It's Busan Day! Will be flying thru Air Busan from Jeju to Busan.  And the best way to see most of Busan? - Busan City Tour!

Day 8 - March 21

Hope to see the start of Spring at the Cherry Blossom province of South Korea - Jinhae! It will be a half-day tour as I'll be spending the afternoon for shopping at Nampo-Dong and in Guinness World Record's largest Department Store in the world, Shinsegae Centum City. 

Day 9 - March 22

It's another travel experience! Will take the most fastest train from Busan to Seoul - KTX!

I'm fond of train travel and this will be the best!  Will splurge a little in my accommodation at YMCA which is located at the vicinity in Myeongdong for my shopping spree!  It's time to buy all those pre-orders.  It's business with pleasure day!

Three Full Spring Days in Beijing

Athough I live in a tropical country, Philippines, I heart Spring so much that I chased it in South Korea in May 2010 but was a little bit late to experience the cherry blossom season.  Finally, I realized that dream in Beijing in Spring of 2011.

Why do I heart Spring so much? 

Because this is when the flowers bloom, when everything around is vibrant, colorful and full of hope after the white winter season and this is where it seems love is everywhere. Just by reading books with a plot on Spring and watching movies with the season of Spring, I am always fascinated.

My trip to Beijing is quite different from the other travels that I had - it was full of surprises and expect the unexpected for me.  Anna was "unofficially" our assigned itinerary planner and did most of the research of the places that we visited. Here she shared the comprehensive itinerary including the pre-departure preparations and expenses of our whole trip. Without any idea of the whole thing, I found it more fun discovering the new experiences as we explored Beijing in three full days.

Summer Palace 颐和园 Yi Je Huan  the charming Summer Palace Summer Palace is such a charming place, a good place to relax and just get the day passes by.  I liked the long stretch of the road that connects to the other gate with the horizon of the river and surrounding trees that complement the architectural structures of temples and pagodas that depict the era of dynasties. Temple of Heaven is a discovery for me.  I don't know about this place but I had enjoyed there even though the sand storm started to strike in Beijing during our last day. Watch out for my Temple of Heaven experience here.

The Forbidden City

We're not able to go inside The Forbidden City as it was closed already but worth the visit still.  But I'd love to know more its history too.

Wangfujing Street can be considered as the best of both worlds - flea market at the other side of the street and premium outlets of signature brands at the other side.  It has different faces  as well from the materialistic facade of shopping sprees to the holiness of the Catholic Church.  Check more of my Wangfujing experience here.

A Must Prep!

• I shared how to apply for a Tourist/Family Visit visa for Beijing here.
• Do-It-Your Own Itinerary (refer to Anna's blog, it's very informative). She shared the following points:
• Print the name of the places and useful phrases written in Chinese characters for the locals to look at when you ask them for help
• Exchange your PHP to CNY here to avoid the CNY50 charge when you have it exchanged at Beijing Capital International Airport
• Bring a set of spoon and fork if you're not used to dining with chopsticks. Most restaurants don't have spoon and fork.
• Print out Beijing Subway Map with Chinese characters. It's a great help for D-I-Y travellers.

My Beijing Take Aways:

• Great Wall of China is a valid proof for me that dreams do come true. You should not wait for it to happen but chase for it to come true! It left me in awe and I nearly had my tears fall when I saw the greatest work of mankind.  I just learned it in school and I got the chance to finally set my foot on this historical and partly political construction in the world.
• Cherry Blossom Overload - I only wanted to see even one cherry blossom but I saw other flowers that only bloom in Spring.  It will always be a beautiful scene for me.
• My first Peking Duck experience - Dining at the famous and fancy Quanjude Restaurant was a wonderful experience. Other than that, I enjoyed my gastronomic adventures in Beijing. Check my post about that here.
• An unexpected cheap tour - Never did I think that I won't spending much in Beijing. Not that I stopped myself from splurging but it was just that the food are not that expensive even the entrance fees of the famous places that we'd gone to.
• I won a chic luggage! - My entry to Travel and Leisure Magazine won me a chic luggage. It was so unexpected that I felt winning is like an icing to my cake of travels.

My Six Days in South Korea: Barely Made it to Spring

It was May in Year 2010 and Spring was almost fading in the scene. We barely made it to  the cherry-blossom season and actually had our share of the first strike of monsoon season in South Korea on our last two days.  I couldn't help but keep on rummaging my external drive to view our photos - those were surreal, so beautiful and seems everything so perfect!

And the best way to keep those memories alive are through this post. Here I am sharing how we spent our six full days in South Korea.

My Itinerary:

• Day 1 : Arrived Seoul 11:30 PM and just had our midnight snack of streetfoods along Hongdae area.
• Day 2: We tried to catch the Cherry Blossoms in Yeouido but flowers were no longer in bloom. Kimchi is more than a side dish... it has more interesting stories and a lot of varieties - that's what we learned from its tailored-fit museum housed inside COEX mall.  After lunch, we then spent our magical afternoon and night at Everland Resort.

• Day 3:  Not able to catch the shuttle bus to Nami, we changed our itinerary right away and spent the rest of the day in Gyeongbokgung Palace and Myeongdong area.  That was a good chance to let go of our addiction to shop and hoard lots and lots of Skin Food products. Towards late afternoon, we took the full view of the beauty of Seoul from the top of N. Tower and Namsam Park.

• Day 4: We explored the other provinces outside Seoul and spent the whole day biking and strolling in Namiseon Island.   Then, made it to the night shopping at Dongdaemun.

• Day 5: We went back to Incheon and took the ferry to Si-do Island for the setting ground of the Korean drama "Full House" .  We then transferred to Bukchon Village and experienced Hanok-stay.

• Day 6: With our flight back to Manila scheduled at night, we spent our last day in Seoul shopping at Nandaemun Market.

I planned out our itinerary with some research from different websites.
From the official Korea Tourism Organization to a lot of travel blogs (personal and official). The travel guide book, "Seoul 100" from a colleague was very helpful.

My Take-Aways:

My trip to South Korea marked the many firsts in my travel chronicles.

1. My first travel with tourist visa
    - my first stamp for more travels (hopefully Europe in 2014)

2. My first Spring experience
    - how I love Spring that I had to feel it again in Beijing
3. My first South Korea taste of authentic Kimchi and other cuisine 
     - just to personally experience how my eyes feast on the food in K-dramas (Though it was not appealing to me in real life)

4. My first travel abroad with Anna, Joan and Vivian
    - that made them officially my travel buddies. Been together for so many travels in the Philippines and abroad.
5. Finally, making it to see the K-drama locations
    - like Korean cuisine, it's more of personally being in the place!

South Korea left a spot in my heart that I wanted to go back again.  It is named as the Europe of Asia, where East meets West, existence of nature-themed parks and beautiful flowers and scenery that only a cold weather can provide.  

I had encountered difficulties in conversing with locals but with a few hand gestures and pictures, was able to pull it through. It only shows that people around the world can still communicate, even not in words but with a few genuine smiles and friendly gestures.

On March 2013, I will be living my dream for a solo travel in two weeks and I choose South Korea again, my gateway to Europe Experience.

My Four Days in Davao City and Samal Island

I decided to join my travel buddies only weeks before the actual trip because of my prior commitments. Fortunately, AirAsia and TigerAirways/SeaAir offered promo airfare.   Coincidentally, our scheduled trip falls on Davao's 29th Kadayawan Festival! What a chance to witness the King of Festivals in the Philippines.

The last minute changes in our plans - accommodations, van rental arrangements and even itinerary - are worth them all!

• Day 1 : Davao Pearl Farm Resort
• The first batch (Anna, Joan & Vivian) arrived Davao City at 6:00AM from NAIA 3 while I & Jesi arrived at 12NN from Clark International Airport.  Third batch (Lea & Emily) arrived 11PM from NAIA 4 on a delayed flight and not able to join us in Pearl Farm Resort.

• Day 2 : Samal Island 
• We explored the other side of  Island Garden City of Samal. It marked another firsts in my travel adventures! I conquered the giant waterslide that dropped me into the sea.

• Day 3: Davao City Indak-Indak sa Kadalanan
• We braved the sun and witnessed the Indak-Indak (or the street dance competition) as part of the Kadayawan Festival in the morning and explored the other tourist destinations of the city in the afternoon.  We visited the Crocodile Park and Japanese Tunnel. We also tried the famous Bulca Chong, the restaurant that serves carabao meat in various cuisine (bulalo, fried and buttered).

• Day 4: Floral Parade and outside of Davao City
• We watched the Floral Parade and had fun screaming at local celebrities like Coco Martine, John Lloyd Cruz and Jake Cuenca who joined the parade.
• We then spent the afternoon in Malagos Garden Resort, Philippine Eagle Sanctuary and Eden Nature Resort.  We spent our last night in Davao with seafoods dinner along the sea at Liza Times Restaurant.

It was my first time in Davao and Samal Island and enjoyed a lot of the new things that I tried.  It was different as I took everything as my firsts, thus, with so much surprise and anticipation.  I acted as the "trying-hard" translator/interpreter for my travel buddies struggling with my little Bisaya words and more of Ilonggo words as I conversed with the locals. 

With my recent trip, it ignited me to go back to my Social Studies and History subjects back in High School with the facts that I learned from the trip:

• Davao Pearl Farm Resort is not part of Davao City but of Garden Island City of Samal
• How the Japanese Tunnel was accidentally discovered by a local engineer and how Marcos got the Golden Buddha and gold bars.
• Pangil, the largest Crocodile before Lolong
• Local words in Davao with similarities in Ilonggo
• How disciplined people of Davao is, especially about the "No Smoking" ordinance.
• Kadayawan Festival being the king of all festivals
• Davao City being the second largest city in the Philippines
• And more!

Kudos to Davao City Tourism also for providing free Davao City Tourist Map at the Arrival Area of Davao International Airport.  It was a great help to the local and foreign tourists who can tour around Davao City and nearby towns at ease. From my list of domestic travels, I vow at DIA as the best in my list, next to Cebu then Bacolod.

The language barrier made it difficult to us to choose the right food in Korea. But we still took all our might to try and feed ourselves.  My low tolerance to spicy and chili food did not allow me to appreciate authentic Korean food but it did not stop me from tasting

when we arrived at Nami port, we immediately looked for some nice resto to eat. we did not that there are more choices in Nami. We looked at the restos nearby as a shining stars to save our grumbling stomach.
the lady cannot understand simple English so when she uttered "chicken", we nod our heads right away and point some pictures in the menu list which looked like a noodle. At the end, we ordered chicken and amazed how it was cooked and black cold noodles.
